Well, I have to recommend my home Croatia :) We have moderate temperatures, mountains, warm sea brimming with islands, and are opening up to digital nomads.

Ohhhhh that all sounds lovely. Which part of Croatia would you say is most expat friendly/opening to digital nomads?

Gabi of Journey Jots's avatar

Any part, it's a small country :) I guess newcomers choose their home according to their temperature/climate preferences, urban/rural, continent/coast/islands etc :)

Omg Asia It was like reading my own words! Your second chatGPT search? I did that exactly last year, and that's how I landed on Valencia, which I know you know I am head over heels with now that I've visited!

I totally understand your frustration that you loved Italy so much but it's not necessarily ticking all your boxes. Maybe it's a case of going and experiencing both with your daughter? Oftentimes being there for a long period will completely change your mind about a place (I see this having only been in Valencia for 3 weeks and moving my family there this year 🤦‍♀️😂😅).

Either way, I'm so excited for you, and I'm so excited for me too. When are you making the move, and where are you now exactly?

Asia Dawn's avatar

We are SO aligned on this! Right now we're near Milan, but we don't have a timeline yet. Definitely this year, hopefully soon, but as you said, we need to visit this places first. 😅 It's easy to travel from here, though.

Do you have any other trips to Valencia coming up before your big move? Have you picked your apartment yet or are you waiting until you arrive? Maybe I'll see you there! 💃🏻

That's right, sorry you did say that in the post.

We might make it to Valencia before August, I'm hoping we will. I'm still trying to get Hudson in a school for autumn! It's tricky from afar. Your daughter is younger if I recall? That's good if you don't have to worry about that yet.

Our plan is to get an Airbnb for a couple weeks and then try to find a long-term rental during that time.

Asia Dawn's avatar

Yes she will be 3 for the autumn enrollment period so we don’t get her into preschool that’s ok. I am very curious about the options, though! It would be nice for her to get started soon. How old is Hudson?

I think getting an Airbnb while looking for something long-term is a good approach.

Oh wow, this resonated so deeply.

I completely get the shift from solo, post-divorce travel adventures to now needing something that works for both of you.

I actually moved from Hong Kong to Germany, and then from Germany to the U.S. with my two girls not long ago, and even though our situations differ, your reflections on researching, testing things out, and letting feelings guide the decision really struck a chord.

Germany is a family friendly place. It can be hard for someone who doesn't speak German. But once you master that, it is a great place to raise kids. If you are interested in moving to Germany, you can check out my blog, where I talk everything about moving and living in Germany: www.mylifeingermany.com

I did a similar adventure a few years ago. From your list I would endorse Valencia and Montpellier. I visited both and esp wish I tried Valencia for longer.

I would remove Malaga - I went there and it was so touristy even in the winter. I would also remove Nice for similar reasons.

I would remove the Italian options as they are islands and out of the way. Maybe there is a gd hub in northern Italy or Umbria which might be a better choice. I don’t have a good suggestion though.

France - I would add Toulouse, Lyon (and its surrounding area like Grenoble or Chambery - smaller but lots of nature). The other two are bigger cities but close to nature and lots going on. I also heard good things about Bordeaux.

(Overall for France if you don’t speak French anywhere outside of Paris is probably going to be a big adjustment.)

I didn’t explore Portugal much so not much to suggest there.

After months travelling around, I ended up in Aix en Provence in France - but after all this testing out I only stayed a year for various reasons but not finding a good community was a big reason for leaving. I speak fluent French n knew some people but it was hard work to really be part of things as a freelancer.

I ended up moving home to Scotland and then to Dubai.

I still wonder about trying to be based in Europe again if so - Valencia, Toulouse, Amsterdam and Lisbon would be top of my list next time.

Hope that is helpful for your research. I had similar criteria to you - the only difference I was single/no kids.

Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough response. I really appreciate it!

I agree with not wanting to live on an island.

I speak Spanish so am definitely inclined towards Spain but don’t want to write off France if I find a place I love. I can always learn the language. I’ll be in Nice soon to check it out again (since it’s close enough to Milan) but have to plan the rest of my visits. I’ll look into the other cities you’ve suggested.

Babe I lived in Valencia for 2 years and I genuinely think it’s the best place you can be in Europe right now as a digital nomad. The design of the city is simply chess kiss, as you can reach any point in the city by riding a bike in max 30 minutes! I moved there when it wasn’t as popular as it’s now and unfortunately it’s not as affordable anymore. Rent prices have gone up in ways I can’t even comprehend as I’ve seen it happening in real time! Only 2 years ago I paid for a 100sqm flat with 3 rooms and a big rooftop terrace together with Luanas dad 1200€ which is now the price you’d pay for a studio apartment 🥲 but if you’re lucky and find a good apartament it’s amazing and there’s so much to do, also amazing hikes nearby ❤️

Omg I had no idea you were based there for a bit! Can we please talk more?? That’s really sad about the rent prices and definitely something to consider. I can’t say I love your price comparison…yikes. But everything else I’ve heard makes it sound VERY promising for us! Planning to go visit soon and see for ourselves. Any tips welcomed 🙏🙏

Hi Asia, I left you a comment yesterday but now I don't see it here. I use numbeo, earth awaits and chatgpt but in the end, for me anyway, I learned I can live (and thrive and find community) almost anywhere. If sure you know the main questions: weather, proximity to what's important to you, language and culture, etc.

I'm also floored that you're a Reflector, that's the rarest! I'm a Projector, which is super challenging for me because I'm not a "wait for the invitation" kind of person, LOL.

I can't wait to see where you land! :)

Asia Dawn's avatar

Ohhh I love this combo!! Very creative. It also sounds like you're very adaptable. I know I am too. Weather definitely affects my mood and I cannot wait to get out of grey, foggy Milan and into some warmth and sunshine! (But please no humidity...I tried Playa del Carmen once and nearly melted...)

How cool that you're a Projector! Also rare. My daughter is one too. I'm very curious to see how this will impact our mother/daughter relationship as a Reflector/Projector duo. :)

Kimberly Anne's avatar

Yes I am quite adaptable, which bodes well for this lifestyle and I agree re: weather affecting mood!!

It's rainy and gray in Porto these days and always high humidity. At first the humidity was awful for me but now I love it! When I go back to visit my family in California I feel like the life/water is being sucked out of me but I never noticed that while living there for my entire life!

But I do agree with heat + humidity like Playa del Carmen, I felt that way there too.

I'm so excited that you're going to move toward better weather! Perhaps Spain, around Alicante or Valencia?

Oooo your daughter is a Projector!!! We're a handful LOL.

And I don't know enough about HD but I was married to a Reflector and it worked (until it didn't lol).

Asia Dawn's avatar

I am definitely going to visit both Alicante and Valencia so let’s see. Fingers crossed 🤞

I cannot believe you were married to a Reflector! One of my besties is also a Reflector and when we’re together I never know who is mirroring who lol.

Kimberly Anne's avatar

YES re: your visits to Alicante and Valencia! I know people who live in both places and LOVE those areas. Plus there are so many smaller towns along the coast too.

Ha, yeah the marriage was a bit difficult tbh but I was 19 so I didn't know much. By the time I left at 36, things were clearer but I only learned he was a reflector last month!

That's so cool that one of your besties is a Reflector! Most of mine are Projectors!!! hahaha! So no one asks anyone to do anything... LOL

I am not actually sure what my Human Design type is. I've done the test once and it said I am a Manifestor but I would have to read more into it to understand whether that's true. Did you have yours done through a professional or just an online test?

Expand full comment
Asia Dawn's avatar

Then you probably are a Manifestor! There's a lot that goes into it on the backend, but we just need to enter our birth details to get the correct chart. From there, I find that having it interpreted is a different story! I like to turn to podcasts and HD coaches for more of a deep dive. I purchased my Human Design Blueprint from Erin Claire Jones, for example.

So interesting to read about your (or should I say ChatGPT’s? 😂) thought process, Asia!

As an Italian, I consider Italy the opposite of an easy place to live—you kinda have to fight for everything: internet connection, traffic jams (if you’re in Rome or big cities), sexism… By now, you probably know what I’m talking about! I'm always so impressed when I see Substack writers from different countries moving to Italy, sometimes without even speaking a word of Italian. I’m like, "how do they pull it off in that crazy place?" Haha

Lisbon, I think, matches a lot of your criteria (I lived there for three years and still consider it a second home), although it's not as affordable as it used to be. As for Valencia, I’ve always heard amazing things about it!

Looking forward to following your journey on this topic!

(P.S. As a fellow Virgo, I totally relate to the list-making method and the ability to pivot and adjust to new countries constantly. It can definitely be exhausting, though! But hey, here’s to our Sun sign and the adaptation skills it might have gifted us! 😂♍)

Haha ChatGPT and I worked together on this!😂 Living in Italy is NOT easy. I agree with you on that. I was so proud of myself when I lived in Rome, signed a lease, got my codice fiscale. Ahh memories. I think it felt less chaotic at the time since I was coming from Mexico City (which is another kind of chaos). I learned as much Italian as I could before I arrived as well and then did a full immersion course. Knowing the language is so helpful!

Ok I’m curious about Lisbon. Do you speak Portuguese?😅 The fact that you lived there for three years says a lot! What was your favorite part??

I’m actually going to be in Nice soon, and even though I don’t think that France is the answer, I’m looking forward to looking at it with a fresh perspective. I can’t wait to share more!

Caterina's avatar

Yes, I learned Portuguese while there, but Portuguese are known to speak amazing English, so it's very easy to get around. My favorite part of living in Lisbon is that it's a very multicultural city (tons of digital nomads, too), there a lot of affordable (or free) cultural events (little concerts, shows, performances, etc.), it's very close to the beach, very walkable, good food,... do you need any more reasons? Haha I would seriously check it out if I were you, I think it matches many of your criteria! If you do, make sure to report back ;D
